Choosing labels
and ribbons

Our media specialists may ask the following questions to help you choose the correct label or ribbon for your application:

What will the labels be used for?
Will the print need to be scratch or smear resistant?
What temperature will the labels be exposed to? (High heat? Freezing?)
To what surface is the label going to be applied to? What are the characteristics of this surface? (Moist? Curved? Smooth?)
Is the label going to be used in an outside or inside environment?
Will this label be in contact with any chemical solution?
Does your application require UL/CSA approval?

How many rolls of
ribbon do you need?

Add your label height and the label gap (normally .125").
Multiply total height (#1) and total # of labels.
Divide that amount by the ribbon length in inches.

How many labels will a roll of ribbon print?

Divide ribbon length by the total label height (height + gap).

For example, here is how to calculate how many labels you can print with a 300 meter length ribbon:

Ribbon length = 300 meters x 3.281 (to convert to feet) x 12 (to convert to inches) = 11,812 inches.

Divide 11,812 inches by the label repeat length (label height in inches + .125” gap). This will give you the total possible throughput of printed labels.
