How Sweet It Is: Warehouse System Improves Candy Company's Inventory Control and Food Safety

Crowe Transportation is a third-party logistics company. The company operates three facilities in the Elizabethtown, PA area. One of Crowe’s customers, a candy manufacturer that has been in business since the 1800s, approached Crowe with a problem. The company was bursting at the seams of its 130,000 square foot facility. In addition, the confectionary company’s all-manual, first in, first out (FIFO) system could not provide the efficiency and accurate inventory tracking they needed. Based on its long-term relationship with Crowe, the candy company decided to solve its problems by outsourcing its distribution to Crowe.

“Our customer had some good ideas for setting up the system,” says Brian Crowe, president of Crowe Transportation. “They recommended talking to Control Solutions. They made a presentation, and we liked what we saw.”

How to Prevent Bar Code Read and Data Capture Problems

Printing and scanning bar codes seems straightforward. And most of the time it is. But if a bar code fails to read or to capture data properly, the orderly world of bar coding can transform into chaos, where:

  • Systems come to a complete halt

  • Product is diverted to the wrong conveyor line and shipped to the wrong customer

  • Point of sale products are charged incorrectly

  • Patients receive incorrect medication or doses

  • It becomes impossible to track sensitive materials

The cost to correct problems goes well beyond the cost of remarking. Suppliers are fined. Customers experience delayed product delivery. Business relationships are stressed. However, bar code verification provides a simple and certain way to ensure you are printing readable codes.

Bar code verifiers allow you to:

  • Improve quality and ensure maximum reliability between the printing of the codes to the scanning of the codes (in accordance with ISO requirements)

  • Increase productivity when high first-read-rates are achieved

  • Avoid unnecessary costs by not remarking (labor and material cost), minimizing product returns, and avoid penalties, fines and production line shutdowns

  • Collect more accurate data to help make better and more informed business decisions by successfully scanning the information into the system

  • Avoid compromising the accuracy of this data by maintaining a high standard for print quality control of bar codes

Control Solutions carries a full line of bar code verification equipment, including PC-based verifiers, portable verification devices and sophisticated lab tools for Data Matrix verification. We also offer testing services to assist you with your bar code applications.
