Unique Item Identification (UID) Standards |

Do You Need to UID?On September 13, 2007 the United States Government published an interim rule regarding government furnished property (GFP). This rule states that all contracts recorded after the rule date must make the UID Registry the single point where all GFP information is managed. Eventually, this database of registered property will help establish a national data strategy for tracing parts and information. Under the UID structure, parts management is decentralized. That means part marking and serialization are controlled by the provider. DoD contractors are told to manage their parts marking. To accomplish this, the UID structure uses an international marking standard — 2-D (Data Matrix) — for parts marking. 2-D (Data Matrix) was created to mark very small parts. Prior to its integration into DoD, it was already a public domain symbology used by Japan and some European countries. Now many companies in the United States receive contract awards from DoD that include compliance with WAWF (Wide Area Workflow) or Mil STD 129, Mil STD 130M and UID. Operationally, the functions that contractors need to address to meet government compliance include marking, verification, validation and registration. Is there a group or a committee in your organization to address UID implementation for your project? Are all affected departments in your company included in the process? Control Solutions can help you with your application. Contact us for more information. In future articles we will address the following UID topics:
